Monday, Oct 25, 2021 at 7:00 – 8:30 pm
Durham Public Schools Foundation and Student U will be co-hosting a virtual community conversation as a companion to DPS’ Growing Together community engagement sessions. This event is open to all Durham community members.
Come learn the history behind past policies and their effect on Durham Public schools. Join us to process how our racialized history and experiences show up and impact our school decisions. Register below to join the conversation and please watch this video about the DPS Growing Together Initiative to understand the magnitude of the problem our community is trying to solve. We hope to see you Monday, October 25th at 7:00 pm on Zoom.
We need everyone’s voice at the table to learn alongside the District leadership and to provide feedback on ideas that they are considering based on the vision of the School Board. Attend a DPS Growing Together session and bring your community with you.
Why is this conversation happening?
The Durham Public Schools Board of Education will be voting on a new magnet school policy for elementary schools in December of 2021. The new policy will impact student assignments beginning with the 2023-24 school year. This is the first piece of a multi-year process to update our magnet school policies and school boundaries. It is also the first time since the merger between the city and county schools 30 years ago that our district is taking on this work in a robust way. DPS is hosting several Growing Together conversations to get feedback on new magnet policies for elementary schools.
Who will be there?
We believe that when our public schools thrive all of Durham thrives. We need everyone invested in the future of our public schools, whether or not you have children in public school. This conversation is open for all Durham community members.
What will we talk about?
We have a short, but rich agenda planned that includes a panel of local experts including DPS alum and current DPS parents. Attendants can also join a racial caucus to discuss the information shared among other community members that share their racial heritage.
What else can I do?
SHARE! This event is open to all Durham community members. Please encourage those in your community to register for the event.
